12 South

12 South is a mile of storefronts on a street that used to be a working streetcar suburb, and the scale still shows it: two-story brick buildings, front-porch bungalows a block off the main drag, and a walkability that's rare anywhere in Nashville outside downtown. It's the neighborhood that got there first, before East Nashville or Wedgewood-Houston had a restaurant scene, and it still sets the pace for what a Nashville commercial strip is supposed to feel like — busy, but not chaotic; polished, but not corporate.

The retail is the draw for most first-time visitors. Imogene + Willie sells raw denim made a few blocks from where you're standing, White's Mercantile stocks the kind of Southern home goods that photograph well and hold up, and Judith Bright does fine jewelry with a local following. Food-wise, Edley's Bar-B-Que is the neighborhood's anchor and does East Tennessee-style barbecue that residents actually eat weekly, not just when they have visitors in town. Frothy Monkey and Portland Brew cover coffee at opposite ends of the strip — one's an all-day cafe, the other a tighter, more focused espresso program.

The 'I Believe in Nashville' mural, painted on the side of a building near the Sevier Park end of the strip, is the single most photographed piece of public art in the city, and you will wait in a short line to get your turn in front of it on a weekend afternoon. The 12 South Farmers Market runs Tuesdays at Sevier Park from May through October and is a genuinely local affair rather than a tourist stop. Everything about the neighborhood — the murals, the boutiques, the brunch lines — assumes you're going to walk it, and that's exactly how it should be done.
