Hattie B's Hot Chicken
The hot chicken spot most visitors end up at, and for good reason — Hattie B's is outstanding. The Shut the Cluck Up heat level is legitimately dangerous, the sides (pimento mac and cheese, black-eyed pea salad) are some of the best in town, and the line moves fast.
Hattie B's opened its original Midtown location in 2012, named for Nashville hot chicken pioneer Thornton Prince's counterpart-in-legend Hattie Bell Harville, and built the fried-chicken model that's since spread to Memphis, Atlanta, Birmingham, and beyond. The Midtown spot is still the flagship — a barn-red building near Vanderbilt with a covered patio that fills with students, tourists off Broadway, and regulars ordering the same thing they always do.
The heat scale runs six deep: Southern (no heat), Mild, Medium, Hot, Damn Hot, and Shut the Cluck Up — the last built on a ghost pepper base and treated by staff as something closer to a dare than a menu item. Medium is genuinely spicy by most standards and the honest starting point for first-timers; Hot is where Nashville hot chicken starts to mean something. Sides matter here too — pimento mac and cheese and black-eyed pea salad hold their own against the chicken.
The line moves fast even when it looks long, and the format — order at the counter, food comes out on a cafeteria tray, eat at picnic tables or the patio — keeps things casual. It's an easy first hot chicken experience precisely because the heat levels are honestly labeled and the staff will talk newcomers out of over-ordering.
