Station Inn

The Gulch·live music

The best bluegrass club in America. Cash only, BYO beer from the cooler up front, and some of the tightest picking you'll ever hear. A Nashville institution since 1974 that somehow hasn't changed a bit despite everything around it turning to condos.

A group of bluegrass musicians opened the Station Inn in 1974 as a place to play the music no one on Music Row wanted to record, and the room has barely changed since — low ceiling, plain tables, a stage barely raised off the floor. The Gulch around it has turned into one of the most heavily redeveloped neighborhoods in Nashville, all glass condos and rooftop bars, and the Station Inn just sits there unbothered, still doing what it's always done seven nights a week.

Shows run bluegrass, classic country, and Americana, with music starting most nights around 8pm and doors around 7. Sunday nights are the one to know: a long-running bluegrass jam where any picker can bring an instrument and sit in, no cover charge, and some of the best pickers in a town full of professional musicians will be sitting in the room whether or not they're on the bill. It draws working Nashville session players as much as tourists, which is part of what keeps the playing so sharp.

It's cash only at the door for the cover, though cards work fine at the bar for food and drinks, and there's an ATM outside if you show up empty-handed. Don't expect a polished room or a hostess stand — expect a folding chair, a beer, and musicianship that a lot of bigger, flashier Nashville venues can't touch.

Insider tip

Bring cash specifically for the cover charge — there's an ATM right outside if you forget, but you don't want to be scrambling for it once a set's already started.
