A 300-foot paddle wheeler that cruises the Cumberland River with a live orchestra, dancers, and a Southern-style meal — the closest thing Nashville has to old-fashioned riverboat spectacle. Docks behind Opry Mills, a few minutes from Gaylord Opryland.

Launched in 1985 and christened that July, the General Jackson is named after an 1817 riverboat, itself named for Andrew Jackson. At 300 feet with a 36-by-24-foot paddlewheel, it's the largest showboat of its kind in the world, built to carry over a thousand passengers across a two-story Victorian theater, open-air decks, and dining rooms — closer to a floating opera house than a booze cruise.

Lunch and dinner cruises are the core offering: a themed, chef-prepared Southern meal served while a live orchestra and dancers run a full musical production, all while the boat works its way along the Cumberland past the Nashville skyline. Daytime cruises typically run around 2.5 hours, evening dinner cruises longer, with hotel pickup available from select properties and the boat itself docked on the river behind Opry Mills Mall. Specialty cruises — Valentine's Day, Fourth of July, New Year's Eve, and holiday shows starting mid-November — run at premium prices and sell out early.

It's a package experience rather than a destination bar or restaurant: the food is decent but not the point, and the entertainment is broad, family-friendly stage production rather than an intimate show. That makes it a strong fit for visiting family groups, milestone anniversaries, or anyone who wants a couple of hours of unmistakably Nashville spectacle without needing to plan the rest of the evening — less a meal out, more an event.
