Riverwood Mansion

Riverwood Mansion dates to the late 1790s, when Irish businessman Alexander Porter built it on 2,500 acres and named it Tammany Woods after his family's home in Northern Ireland. Renovations are attributed to William Strickland, the architect behind the Tennessee State Capitol. In 1859, William Frierson Cooper — later Chief Justice of the Tennessee Supreme Court — bought the estate and renamed it Riverwood for its position above the Cumberland River. The Cooper family held it for generations, and the Metropolitan Historical Commission now lists it among Nashville's most significant historic structures. Seven U.S. presidents were guests here during its heyday as a party house, which is the kind of backstory that's hard to manufacture at a newer venue.

Current owners bought and renovated the mansion in the late 1990s specifically as an event venue, and it's been hosting weddings for close to two decades since. The grounds accommodate up to 300 guests across custom-designed gardens, towering magnolias, and a tented reception pavilion, with Greek Revival columns, marble fireplaces, and multiple chandeliers inside for anyone who wants portraits indoors. It's tucked into East Nashville's creative corridor but reads as genuinely secluded once you're on the property — no sightline to downtown to break the illusion.
