The Parthenon

Every other city that hosted a 19th-century World's Fair tore its temporary exposition buildings down afterward. Nashville didn't, and that's the whole story of why a full-scale, full-detail replica of the Athenian Parthenon sits in the middle of Centennial Park today. The original 1897 version was built in plaster and wood for the Tennessee Centennial Exposition, marking a city that had branded itself the "Athens of the South"; locals liked it enough that it was rebuilt in concrete in the 1920s–30s as a permanent structure, doors, pediment sculptures, and all.

Inside, the building's centerpiece is Alan LeQuire's 1990 Athena Parthenos: a 42-foot gilded statue that's the largest indoor sculpture in the Western Hemisphere, and a faithful reconstruction of the long-lost original that stood in the real Parthenon in ancient Athens. It's genuinely startling in person — most visitors expect a museum-scale replica and instead get a statue that fills a multi-story room. The lower level houses the Cowan Collection of American art (mostly 19th- and early 20th-century paintings) alongside changing temporary exhibitions.

It's an easy pairing with the rest of Centennial Park — the park itself has a lake, walking paths, and regular free outdoor events, so the Parthenon works well as a 45-minute-to-an-hour indoor stop in the middle of an afternoon outside. It draws a mixed crowd: art and classics nerds, architecture buffs, families with kids on a school trip, and plenty of locals who've simply never gone inside despite driving past it for years.

Tickets are sold on-site only (at the ticket counter or museum store, not online in advance), and the museum participates in Blue Star Museum free admission for active-duty military between Armed Forces Day and Labor Day, plus free admission for SNAP/WIC/EBT cardholders and their families.
