Wilson County sits directly east of Nashville along I-40, and it splits pretty cleanly into two different personalities. Mount Juliet, right on the Davidson County line and hugging the shore of J. Percy Priest Lake, has gone from a rural crossroads to one of the fastest-growing cities in the country over the past two decades — new subdivisions, new retail, and a commute of roughly 30 minutes into downtown Nashville that's made it one of the default answers for people who want new construction without Williamson County prices. Lebanon, the county seat a bit further out, is the older and more established half: a real historic downtown square, a slower pace, and a stronger small-town identity that Mount Juliet's newer growth doesn't really have.
The price gap between the two mirrors that split — Mount Juliet's median sale price runs well above Lebanon's, reflecting how much of its housing stock is recent construction versus Lebanon's older, more varied mix. Both benefit from being on the Nashville side of Wilson County rather than its rural eastern edge, and both have leaned into the lake: Percy Priest is one of the more genuinely useful recreational amenities in the whole metro for boating, fishing, and weekend swimming, and it's a big part of why Mount Juliet in particular markets itself the way it does.
Wilson County suits people who want new construction and lake access without paying Williamson County prices, and who don't mind a 25-35 minute commute into Nashville along I-40, which handles traffic somewhat better than the routes south. Lebanon is the better fit for anyone who actually wants small-town pace and doesn't need to be as close to Nashville; Mount Juliet is the better fit for anyone commuting daily and wanting newer everything — schools, roads, retail — even if it means less established character.
