Nashville's original serious cocktail bar, operating since 2009 on the fifth floor of the Bill Voorhees Building with no sign to announce it. The bartenders here still work from a pre-Prohibition-leaning menu and won't rush a shake, which is precisely the point if you've had enough of Broadway.

Before The Patterson House opened in 2009, Nashville didn't really have a cocktail bar in the modern sense — it had bars that served cocktails. This one changed that, and it's still the reference point every serious bar in town gets measured against, with James Beard and Bon Appétit recognition to back it up. After sixteen years in its original Midtown carriage house, the bar relocated to the fifth floor of the Bill Voorhees Building, where it now sits adjoining the Michelin-starred Catbird Seat, and picked up the same unmarked-door, no-rush philosophy that made the old room famous.

The drink list runs deep — more than a thousand cocktails have passed through it over the years, built around pre-Prohibition technique: house-cut ice sized to the glass, fresh juice, a bartender who will ask a few questions before building you something rather than handing you a laminated menu. It leans classic (a proper Sazerac, a correctly stirred Manhattan) but the seasonal specials are where the staff actually shows off. A short, well-edited food menu of shareable snacks and heartier plates means you can make a night of it without leaving your seat.

It's a seated bar first — there's no standing around with a drink waiting for a table to open, and the room is built for conversation rather than a crowd. That makes it a genuinely good date spot or a place to take out-of-town guests who want proof Nashville isn't only honky-tonks, but it's not the room for a big loud group or a fast pre-show drink.
